Rafael Gonzales Tapia of Hondo, 83, passed away Wednesday, Mar. 1 2017. Born Oct. 24 1933, in Hondo TX, he was the son of Manuel and Estefana Gonzales Tapia.

Rafael and the family grew up around the Hondo area, as a child and young adult, he assisted my Grandfather Manuel working as a farmhand for the Gilliam Ranch North of Hondo.

When my Grandfather passed away, the family moved to Hondo shortly thereafter on Ave S. My Dad worked Highway construction most of his life. Starting with CH Allison Paving from San Antonio, Wagner and Sons, Ronnie Wagner. Rafael retired after suffering a stroke in 1997.

On Dec 4th 1954, he married Eluteria Sanchez at 21 years of age, daughter of Pilar Sanchez and Sapopa T Sanchez. They celebrated 63 years together on Dec 4th 2016. Rafael loved to Hunt, Fish, Swim and just be outdoors somewhere. Many times our family would wind up at Corpus Christi Beach, Medina Lake or in Bandera at the river. Despite having to work all week, he would always find time for us on the weekends. He was loved and respected by all that knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Reynaldo Tapia; siblings, Reymundo Tapia, Joaquin Tapia, Jose Tapia, Eusebio Tapia, Simona Vosquez, Alicia Ybarra and adoptive brother, Juan G. Tapia.
